Located in Los Angeles, the fellowship program is affiliated with Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Radiology program. We enjoy close affiliation with Cedars Sinai Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Fellowship and Southern California Orthopedic Institute among others. We have an excellent volume in sports medicine MR and CT imaging and consult with many of the professional, collegiate and Olympic athletes and teams in the LA area. Fellows enjoy training in sports medicine, oncology and rheumatology multimodality imaging as well as arthrogram and pain intervention training. The fellows also partake in weekly didactic lectures in MSK radiology as well as with sports medicine fellows.

Fellows will receive in depth training involving the imaging modalities used to assess a wide variety of musculoskeletal related conditions
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): In-depth training in musculoskeletal MRI, including joint, soft tissue, bone, and cartilage imaging.
- CT (Computed Tomography): Advanced applications of CT for assessing bony structures, fractures, and complex anatomy.
- Ultrasound: Expertise in musculoskeletal ultrasound for both diagnostic imaging and image-guided procedures (e.g., injections, aspirations).
- Radiography: Advanced interpretation of musculoskeletal X-rays, including fracture patterns and degenerative conditions.
Fellows will learn to address conditions in areas of the extremities, joints, pelvis, mandible, musculature system and conditions such as TMJ, sacroiliac joint dysfunction and inflammatory disease. MSK performs Fluoro/ultrasound guided procedures such as MR and CT arthrograms. Other procedures include Diagnostic joint/bursa/tenosynovial sheath aspirations for infection/inflammatory etiologies as well as Therapeutic joint/bursa/tenosynovial sheath injections used for pain relief and as a bridge to joint replacement. Fellows involved with the MSK Division are a valuable part of the team. We work together to support the University of Arizona Athletic Association. Working closely with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, our team reads all professional and U of A studies they cover. We also collaborate with Banner-University Medicine Tucson orthopaedic surgeons and outside orthopaedic surgeons, as well as the University of Arizona sports medicine physicians.

The program provides experience in image-guided interventional orthopaedic procedures, including arthrography, joint aspiration, soft tissue and bone biopsy techniques and orthopaedic pain management procedures (fluoroscopic and ultrasound guided steroid and anesthetic injections). Experience is available in vertebroplasty. Advanced training is provided in interpretation of musculoskeletal radiography, CT and MRI. Elective time can be arranged for the MSK fellow to learn neuro and body MRI from fellowship trained experts in these subspecialties as well.
This one-year fellowship is primarily supervised by two fellowship trained musculoskeletal radiologists (Farzad Rezai MD and Andrew Chang MD) who are known for their teaching excellence. Musculoskeletal Radiology fellowships at the University of California Irvine are at the level of Health Sciences Clinical Instructor, and one position is based at Long Beach Veterans Administration. This position will have the benefits and privileges through the University of California, Irvine. Each month, eight UC Irvine Radiology residents rotate through the Tibor Rubin Long Beach VA Medical Center. The fellows will participate in the teaching of UC Irvine residents and medical students, actively participate in interdisciplinary conferences, and take an active part in the ongoing research projects and publications.

The fellowship is of one year duration and four fellows are selected each year. There is a close relationship between the MSK section and referring orthopedists and rheumatologists. The fellowship includes rotations through the UCSF Parnassus campus and the UCSF Orthopedic Institute at Mission Bay, which has a large Sports Medicine Clinic. The fellowship includes a significant volume of joint MRIs, outpatient and inpatient musculoskeletal imaging, as well as spine, pediatric musculoskeletal imaging, rheumatology, and bone tumors. Additionally, a significant volume of musculoskeletal interventions are performed by the fellows, including joint arthrography, steroid injections, bone biopsies, radiofrequency ablations of osteoid osteomas, and various ultrasound-guided procedures. Diagnostic and procedural musculoskeletal ultrasound is also offered. Conferences include sports medicine, tumor board, rheumatology, journal club, morbidity and mortality, and metabolic. Opportunity for fellows to teach UCSF medical students and residents. Additional active, extramurally funded clinical research group in rheumatology, osteoporosis, orthopedics, MR imaging. Fellows receive instruction in a wide spectrum of image interpretation across all modalities, with advanced MR imaging at 1.5 and 3T. In excess of 5,000 Musculoskeletal MRIs are performed by our department annually.
