The Musculoskeletal (MSK) Fellowship at UNC Health is designed to provide exceptional subspecialty training that prepares fellows equally well for careers in both academic and private practice musculoskeletal radiology. The program emphasizes not only diagnostic excellence but also strong communication skills and collaborative relationships with radiology colleagues, referring clinicians, and imaging technologists. Fellows are expected to demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and a strong work ethic in all interactions within the UNC healthcare system.
Fellows gain extensive experience interpreting musculoskeletal MRI and CT studies, reviewing cases directly with attending radiologists during cross-sectional imaging shifts. In keeping with a model of graded independence, fellows initially review radiographs with supervision and progressively transition to independent interpretation of plain films as the year advances. Procedural training is a key component, with fellows performing a broad range of interventions and actively participating in daily biopsy review conferences, where they present and discuss cases with the division.
Education remains a central focus of the fellowship. Fellows attend dedicated teaching conferences led by faculty and contribute to multidisciplinary conferences, eventually taking on presentation roles. All clinical and educational activities take place at the main campus of UNC Hospitals, offering a comprehensive and collaborative training environment. Interested applicants should submit required materials to the Musculoskeletal Imaging Fellowship Coordinator, Virginia Carver, [email protected] who is also available to assist with application-related inquiries.

The Division of Musculoskeletal Radiology at the University of Virginia offers a high volume clinical practice through which our fellows see a wide range of pathology. Fellow education is a constant emphasis among the faculty, with a dedicated fellow lecture curriculum, numerous interdisciplinary conferences, and daily view box teaching from experts in the field. The fellowship also provides ample opportunity for graded fellow independence throughout the year, both in diagnostic interpretations and procedures. We run an exceptionally busy interventional service which gives fellows extensive hands-on experience, with up to 35 interventional musculoskeletal procedures scheduled daily across multiple sites. Our fellows get extensive spine radiology exposure, both with cross sectional imaging as well as through interventions. Our trainees leave prepared for private practice or academics, with confidence in interpreting "bread and butter" sports medicine imaging as well as pediatric, oncologic, and rheumatologic MSK imaging. As a large fellowship, we have an extensive fellow network throughout the country which can be a great aid when searching for post fellowship jobs. An additional unique aspect of our fellowship is that our fellows have the option to spend a week at a time performing overnight general radiology final reads on ED patients, with subspecialist back-up. This optional "24/7" coverage internal moonlighting program both helps the fellow maintain general radiology skills during fellowship year and results in a significant salary boost. Our fellows also generally receive a number of academic days which can be utilized for research, independent study, operating room observation, or elective time in other radiology divisions.

We are a highly regarded hospital system in Richmond, the capital city of Virginia. The VCU Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention fellowship is a one-year program. Fellows are predominantly based in a brand new state-of-the-art Orthopedic Imaging outpatient center in the vibrant Short Pump area, a suburb just outside of Richmond. Fellows also rotate at our other outpatient center (Stony Point) and at our main VCU medical center.
We have 6 musculoskeletal trained faculty and are still expanding. Fellows in our program will become experts at all aspects of musculoskeletal imaging, including spine imaging, and at performing MSK procedures (CT and US guided biopsies, joint injections/aspirations, epidural steroid injection, facet injections). We have a high daily volume of MSK CT, MRI and US. Our department includes friendly and expertly trained support staff to assist with all interventional procedures. The MSK section works closely with VCU's large and highly rated Orthopedic department, as well as the Rheumatology and PMR departments. Our fellows focus on cross-sectional imaging. Optional in-house MSK moonlighting opportunities have allowed recent fellows to more than double their base salary. Elective time is available (e.g. nuclear medicine, emergency, pediatric, chest, breast, neuro or abdominal imaging)
The Richmond area is a great place to live and to raise a family. It has been regularly ranked on US News's lists for Best Places to Live and Best Places to Retire.
