Mission Statement

Society of Skeletal Radiology’s efforts shall be to provide continuing medical education for practicing musculoskeletal radiologists via an annual scientific meeting.

  1. The goals of this annual meeting are to encourage research activity and dissemination, stimulate collaboration among members, and refine subspecialty expertise.
  2. Peer-reviewed papers will be given by society members covering such musculoskeletal topics as tumors, arthritis, sports medicine/trauma, metabolic/endocrine disease, spine topics, imaging techniques and procedures, resident/fellow education and socioeconomic issues.
  3. Completed research, preliminary work, or simply ideas can be given a forum, with discussion encouraged.
  4. Based on needs assessment, special top panel discussions will be developed and presented.

Accreditation Statement

Please check back for CME accreditation updates.

Needs
The need for this scientific meeting has been established from a review of written meeting evaluation surveys for each individual scientific presentation from prior meetings, an analysis of a needs questionnaire completed at the completion of each annual special focus session, personal interview of the Executive and Program Committees with meeting attendees and Society members and detailed discussion of the Program Committee with the Executive Committee.

As a result, this year’s program will focus on providing sessions to meet the identified needs. The tumor session will demonstrate new imaging techniques and provide imaging / pathologic correlation. The session on hip and lower extremity will provide an overview of current hip imaging controversies. New interventional musculoskeletal techniques are reviewed including cutting edge procedures such as injection of platelet rich plasma. The session in knee imaging will demonstrate cartilage imaging techniques and discuss the longitudinal appearance of ACL mucoid degeneration. Imaging of the shoulder and upper extremity will cover evolving controversies over the imaging appearance of adhesive capsulitis and review imaging of the post-operative rotator cuff tear. Cutting edge research topics will demonstrate a new imaging technique for detection of chronic exertional compartment syndrome and show the effectiveness of radially oriented multiplanar reformations in detecting knee cartilage defects. Lastly, the session on clinical practice will cover imaging of crystal arthropathy, bone marrow edema syndrome of the hip in pregnancy, and review the utility of spine and sacroiliac joint imaging in clinical decision making.

There will be multiple case presentations and ePosters to provide a forum to discuss difficult cases and combine contributions to improve the learning experience.

Objectives:

At the completion of the Scientific Program, the participants should be able to:

  • Identify new imaging techniques and their application in musculoskeletal radiology.
  • Evaluate ongoing clinical and basic research projects by Society members.
  • Illustrate new diagnostic modalities.
  • Identify emerging techniques and technologies of interest to the Musculoskeletal radiologist.
  • Recognize new imaging manifestations of musculoskeletal disease.

Focus Session Objectives:

At the completion of this session, the participants should be able to:

  • Describe the normal and pathologic MR appearance of bone marrow throughout childhood and adolescence.
  • Describe the technical aspects and clinical use of MR chemical shift imaging of the bone marrow.
  • Recognize the MR appearance of the bone marrow in different types of anemia.
  • Review the use of ultrasound in basic and advanced interventions of the musculoskeletal system.
  • Identify the technical and clinical aspects of bone and soft tissue musculoskeletal biopsies.

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Workshop: Interventional Techniques

Educational Needs:
Practicing radiologists and their patients would benefit from a hands-on workshop where the radiologist can practice and improve their ultrasound-guidance skills. This hands-on workshop will involve real-time hands-on needle guidance using various animal models, such as turkey breasts, pig feet, and cow tendons.

Educational Objectives:
Integrate the experience in the guidance of needles using ultrasound.
